Do people not care that we live in a small town and what they say will get back to me? Maybe they want me to hear about it from others so they don't have to confront me?

I learned a long time ago that you need to take what is told to you with a grain of salt. Taken out of context things can sound hurtful when it was not intended that way and sometimes the one carrying the tale to you is the one who really has issues.
An old school teacher once said to a parent of one of her students, "I'll only believe half of what he tells me about you and I'll only believe half of what he tells me about you."
Take heart, no one makes it through life without having someone, somewhere say something about them.
It does not change who or whose we are. I love you.

I am curious about the people who take joy from sharing what is said - my first impression is that they are mean-spirited and stupid; but that is just my first impression.
